Steven Davis is a distinguished figure in North Carolina's speech and debate community, renowned for his dedication and leadership. In 2006, he founded the Ardrey Kell High School Speech and Debate team in Charlotte, transforming it from a small group of enthusiastic students into one of the state's largest and most successful programs within a few years. Under his guidance, the team achieved numerous accolades, including multiple state championship titles and over 95 national qualifiers, reflecting his commitment to excellence in forensics education.

Steven Davis's dedication to fostering communication skills and critical thinking among students has left an indelible mark on North Carolina's educational landscape. As a result, the Tarheel Forensic League awards the Steven Davis Debate Sweepstakes award to schools demonstrating excellence in debate events.

Kurt Earnest Speech Sweepstakes

Kurt Earnest has been a seminal figure in North Carolina's speech and debate community coaching at Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville. In 1992, he was honored with the Mildred Hussey Coach of the Year award, recognizing his exceptional coaching contributions. In addition, Earnest was recognized as a Two-Diamond Coach with the NSDA and was also inducted into the Virginia Sutherland Circle of Honor in 2008.

His enduring impact is commemorated through the Kurt Earnest Speech Sweepstakes, an award presented at the Tarheel Forensic League State Championship to schools demonstrating excellence in speech events.

Randy Shaver Small-Program Sweepstakes

Randy Shaver has made significant contributions to the field of speech and debate in North Carolina, particularly through his role at T.W. Andrews High School. In 1991, he was honored with a Gold Key by the Barkley Forum for High Schools, recognizing his dedication to forensic education. Further cementing his legacy, Shaver was inducted into the Virginia Sutherland Circle of Honor by the Tarheel Forensic League in 1993, acknowledging his instrumental role in promoting speech and debate activities within the state.
To honor his legacy and enduring impact on forensics education, the Tarheel Forensic League awards the Randal Shaver Small Schools Sweepstakes in recognition of their commitment to the activity.
